How To Oil Paint - Techniques, tips and lessons from an artist

You want to learn how to oil paint?

My name is Trevor Goodwin, I have been painting for 45 years, and have begun to concentrate on oils in the last 10-15 years. I have really got interested in portraits and military style paintings, and have sold paintings through galleries and I have been commissioned for many others recently. Below you can see a painting I completed for a country house in England. This was the first military painting, and painting on such a large scale I had ever done.

When I wanted to learn how to oil paint, I digested everything I could find. However much of what I found was irrelevant, costly or plain patronising.

Many of the books and articles I read assumed I could afford to spend unlimited amounts of money, or had my own 500 square feet studio, for crying out loud I am a working man, father of two, I have a mortgage and bills to pay. Who can afford that stuff?

Painting as a Hobby

I had a limited budget, and no fancy place to do my painting. So I gradually built up my materials, and I paint all my pictures either in the kitchen or in my living room, often to my wifes chagrin.

Like many people I have read dozens of books by the biggest names in painting, and there are many fantastic books. However there is no substitute for advice and information direct from another person, however this kind of tuition doesn't come cheap!

Plus experts will tell you things that are relevant to an expert, but most amateurs or people who paint for a hobby do not have the money or time that a professional painter has. Hopefully my blog and videos will strike a compromise between getting good results and not spending an absolute fortune, plus you won't have to spend the next 40 years learning by mistakes! I've already done that for you.

I intend to show you how to sketch out your painting, how to apply coats, what colors to mix and how to use the various tools of the trade. I will explain how you don't have to spend a fortune to acheive fantastic results, and that sometimes spending less is more!

After speaking to my son, who is the internet expert, he suggested that I should produce some videos to share what I know, and then use the internet to pass them on. So here goes!
